My Webserver Project

I have now added a link in the nav bar to be transferred to my webserver. I am currently moving this info across, so some pages aren't finished just yet. But feel free to take a look ;o)

I have made this page for people who would like to run their own website from their own home. On here you will read about my thoughts, idea's & problems that I came up against while setting up my very own web server. I will also listing in detail the bit's & pieces used to make it all work. This is still an ongoing project at the moment, so as far as Bandwidth & Performance goes, I can't comment on that yet!

History

Since I hooked up to the Information Super-highway, known to you and me as the Internet, I have always wanted my very own website. I started off using the free web space from my ISP, but as I started to get involved with teaching myself web design, I soon realised that their servers couldn't give me the functionality that I wanted my web pages to have. There was another problem, Adverts! These were placed on every page I created which I didn't want.

Next step then was to look at an independent hosting company. There are lot's and lot's of these companies to choose from, but I found a company that offered a years hosting for £23 a year which also came with support for Microsoft Frontpage.

All was going well for just under a year, but as I started to progress with web design, I was having better ideas about what I wanted to do with my web pages and needed more functionality from the hosting. It was at this point that I had the thought of hosting my own web site from my very own web server.

While I started to research my proposed new project, I joined another hosting company, which I am still with today. They are called Ukhost4u & their web address is www.ukhost4u.co.uk This hosting costs me £50 a year with support for Microsoft Frontpage, ASP.net, Perl, PHP, and a host of applications which I can install on my site, e.g. e-commerce sites, PHP forums, chat rooms etc.

So, if it is that good, why am I still wanting to run my own web server??? To be honest, I don't know. I had this idea ages ago, I looked into it, acquired the hardware, had a go at it, but I couldn't get it to work!

Research

To find out what was involved, I looked at various sites & forums, but either they weren't involved enough or they simply told me that because hosting can be so cheap and easy to get hold of, why bother! This I hate. I have had an idea, and like most people, I want to see it through.

Over the years, I have become involved in Computer Servers & at one point, owned about 6 of the things, so why not put them to use. So, the vast majority of what you read from this point onwards, is my own work and idea's.
